A Beginner’s Guide to Lash Extensions: What You Need to Know Before Your First Appointment

You've been thinking about it for a while now and you've finally decided to take the plunge and book your appointment! You're first lash appointment can be both exciting and a little nerve-wrecking. So to help you navigate your new venture into the world of lashes, here'sm our guide to what to expect at your first lash appointment.

Pre-Appointment Prep

Before you actually book your appointment, make sure you do the following:

  1. Research your lash artist. These days, there are many lash artists to choose from but a quick look at their reviews and proper certifications will separate the good from the bad.

  2. Patch Test. If you're prone to allergic reactions and you have had negative experiences in the past, it's best to go for a patch test to make sure you aren't allergic to anything.

  3. Clean your lashes. Before you arrive to your appointment, make sure you clean your eyes. Avoid wearing mascara at least 24 hours before to ensure your lashes are free from residue that could interfere with the adhesive.

Consultation

Before your lash artist begins lashing you, she will perform a consultation where she will ask you what you aim to achieve from your lashes.

  1. Discuss your desires. This is the time to communicate with your artist anything you want to achieve and anything you don't want. She will discuss with you if you want something more natural or dramatic. This is a great time to show some inspirations or specific styles you like.

  2. Assessment of your lashes. Your artist will have a look at your natural lashes and communicate what your lashes can and can't handle. She'll discuss what she thinks will be the best fit for you.

The Application Process

There is a simple procedure that is carried out during your appointment

  1. Preparation and Comfort. You'll lie down on a comfortable bed and the lash artist will place eye pads to cover your bottom lashes. This may be the most uncomfortable part of the treatment as you feel scared as the eye pads come close to your eye. It is a natural reflex to close your eyes when something comes close. Once the eye pads and placed, you should feel no discomfort.

  2. Application. Individual synthetic lashes are applied to each of you natural lashes using adhesive. You may feel a very light pressure as your artist rests her hand on your forehead but otherwise it should feel very relaxing. You may even experience a tingling sensation as the artist's tweezers move your lashes. You shouldn't feel any discomfort or burning. In the unlikely event that you do, please let your artist know she she can make any necessary adjustments.

  3. Duration. It's important to know that this process can take anywhere from 2-3 hours depending on the type of lashes and how many natural lashes you have.

Aftercare Instructions

You lash artist will give you instructions on how to take care of your lash extensions.

  1. Avoid steam. For the first 24-48 hours, it's best to avoid steam or heat as this can affect the lash adhesive.

  2. Gently cleanse your lashes. Make sure you use a gentle, oil-free cleanser to clean your lashes. Keeping them clean and oil free is vital to longer lasting lashes.

  3. Brush your lashes. Use a clean spoolie brush to keep your lashes in their place and looking fresh.

  4. Avoid touching or picking your lashes. Playing too much with your lashes will cause them to fall out faster. Just leave them to do their thing.

What to expect after your appointment
  1. Adjustment period. It's normal to not feel used to your lashes. Give yourself a few days to get used to your new look. It you feel there is something you're not 100% happy with about your lashes, reach out to your artist and she should be able to make note of any adjustments for when you next come in.

  2. Maintenance. Lash extensions need regular touch ups as your natural lashes shed. Book your fills ever 2-3 weeks to keep your lashes looking full and fresh.

Trouble shooting and following up
  1. Contact your lash artist. In the unlikely chance you feel irritation or have any concerns, don't hesitate to chat with your artist. They are a professional and will be able to answer any questions. They can schedule a follow up appointment if you need to address any concerns.

  2. Adjustments. Sometimes it takes a few fills before you can decide on what you actually want your lashes to look. At your fill, voice what you liked and what you didn't and your artist will make any necessary tweaks until you end up with the set you desire.
